Palatalisation can be quantity-sensitive: Dorsal Fricative Assimilation in Liverpool English

چکیده

This paper shows that the Liverpool English dorsal fricative, derived through lenition of /k/, is subject to place articulation assimilation, driven by preceding vowel. similar vowel-driven aspects typical perseverative Dorsal Fricative Assimilation (a type palatalisation), as found, for example, in German ich-Laut~ach-Laut alternation, where (among other things) a front high or mid vowel followed [ç], and vowels are back dorsal. However, majority pattern differs from previously described cases [ç] only occurs following long vowels, while remains after their short congeners. quantity-sensitive assimilation has not been reported before. We use Centre Gravity measurements investigate this argue an innovative normalisation technique consonant measurements, based on /k/ aspiration linear regression model. thus both expand taxonomy what known be possible phonology also provide new detail description (including proposal featural analysis its system).

Perceptual and articulatory factors in German fricative assimilation

We present data from an EPG experiment on German fricative assimilation. It has been claimed that fricative sequences other than sibilant clusters do not assimilate due to perceptual constraints. We demonstrate that f#sibilant sequences show in principle the same kind of temporal overlap as sibilant clusters do, but due to the labial constriction dominating the acoustics, this temporal overlap ...

Recursive Path Orderings Can Be Context-Sensitive

Context-sensitive rewriting (CSR) is a simple restriction of rewriting which can be used e.g. for modelling non-eager evaluation in programming languages. Many times termination is a crucial property for program veriication. Hence, developing tools for automatically proving termination of CSR is necessary. All known methods for proving termination of (CSR) systems are based on transforming the ...
